Description

Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie - Small - Adult - Female - Dog - Gisel
Description
This teeny, tiny Sheltie girl is Giselle and she is in need of a very special home that is familiar with mill-type dogs. She has begun wagging her tail at her foster mom and is learning that people are kind. Age/Sex: 3 years, female Size: Small, ~11" at the shoulder, 12 lbs. Temperament: Giselle is very shy and timid in new situations and with new people. She will need time to warm up to a new family. Fence Required: Yes (wood or chainlink); she is a very high flight risk due to her shyness. Gets Along with Dogs: Due to her life prior to rescue, Giselle is more comfortable with animals than with people. She needs to be placed with a social dog who can be her role-model. She enjoys being part of a pack and does well with dogs of all sizes! Gets Along with Cats: Giselle is great with cats and will even share her crate with one! OK to Place with Kids: Her timid nature would make living with children too scary for her. Housetrained: Giselle is very frightened outside, so her foster family has an X-pen potty area set up for her in the garage (she only is in this area for potty time and is in the house the rest of the time). This may transfer well for someone interested in training her to potty pads. Her new family will need to set her up for success with a consistent routine, limited freedom, calm praise for going potty in a designated area, and should never scold her for accidents. Minnesota Sheltie Rescue has housetraining resources available. Crate Trained: Giselle's crate is her safe spot, so her new family will need to feel comfortable using one with her. Her foster family also uses a crate with her at night and when they are not home. Obedience Training: None so far. Giselle's foster family has been working on building trust with her as a first priority. Giselle goes to her crate for a treat when her foster mom is ready to leave for work. Shelties are very smart and responsive to positive training, and like most Shelties, Giselle is very sensitive. Punishment or negative training would be very detrimental to her gentle soul. Leash Manners: Giselle does not walk on a leash at this time and is very frightened outside, so she would like a home where she will not be required to go for walks or spend much time outside. She's a homebody! Activity Level: Active when playing with other dogs, which she enjoys very much. She'll play with toys, but not while you're watching, preferring to take them (or a rug or a blanket) into her crate with her! Level of Barking: Giselle does not bark much, a big plus with a Sheltie! She may bark while waiting for mealtime if she is in another room from her foster mom, or when playing with her doggie friends. Health Issues: Giselle takes an inexpensive medication for hypothyroidism, which is common in the Sheltie breed. Giselle's coat was very matted when she came into rescue so she had to be shaved, and still has some areas where hair has not grown back completely so she looks a bit puppy-ish. Experienced Home: Giselle needs a quieter home experienced with very shy dogs, and would like a family devoted to helping her to adjust to life in a home setting. She has typical behaviors of a dog who was not socialized prior to rescue. Giselle lets you hold her while sitting on the couch, and jumps down when you let go of her. She is such a little sweetheart, and helping her will be very rewarding. For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Giselle's adoption fee is $300.00, and she is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), had a dental cleaning, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home). Not ready to adopt, but you still would like to help a Sheltie in need? Sponsor a Sheltie!
